PS....

ID LIKE TO REPORT THAT OUR YOUTUBE VIDEO "PIGGY BACK" HAS 350 VIEWS...  THIS MUST BE A MISTAKE, YET WE ARE PROUD.

"THAT IS NOT A MISTAKE, LITTLE ONE," MADDIE JUST SAID TO ME.  "YOUTUBE DOES NOT LIE."

OK...  WHO KNEW A VAHDEO UNDER THE CATEGORY OF 'HOW-TO AND STYLE' WITH THE TAGS BELL, PIGGY, BACK AND NANCY WOULD ACTUALLY BE WATCHED.

Cannons and 4 pm breakfast burritos

This morning
 we
went to Les Invalides for
our Revolution/philosophy/our-teacher-thinks-he-is-teaching-at-oxford class.  Invalides is an old Army fortress as well as the crypte where Napoleon da first is buried/entombed.  Twas a dreary day here in paris.  I was all set to wear my cute blue pencil skirt and heels until i checked my lifeline weather.com and discovered that today was destined to be in the 50s (F) and rainy.  So cordoroys with boots it was.

We were psyched to see cannons (cool props for pics, not so cool for killing people) when arrived at the site, but were knocked off our high horse when we sat in the freezing cold cafeteria drinking tea from plastic cups and talked about Napoleon for two hours.  I am all about the history, but take a girl out of the classroom, and she must play!  We took a little tour after i discussing the reading we didn't quite complete (Clocks: we read it three times, don't worry).  We saw Napoleon's tombey thing, a cartooney looking casket the shape of his hat.  Does anyone else think there is a striking resemblance between Napoleon and Cap'n Crunch??  Hmmmm....  We also looked at engravings on the wall of the chapel and discussed the deeper meanings of the pictures, and what they represented.  As much as i always want to part from the group like a lone wolf, i definately learn more by hearing our teacher share his knowledge and by discussing the art with my classmates.  yay, learning!  Our friend Avery thought the place smelled like dead people, but Maddie informed her that it was just church smell.

We did not get to play with cannons during class, and there was no time to do so after because we had to jet off to architecture class.  i love architecture... but we can only sit and stare at ionic renaissance columns for so long until Maddie sleeps with her eyes open and my note taking evolves into elaborate goldfish designs and sketches of headbands i want to make.

after school, we hung out with..... FABIAN!  yay!!! Chicago Friend In Town For One Week!!  Holla.  The three of us went to this diner called "Breakfast in America."  I almost cried when i got my bottomless cup o joe and my breakfast burrito.  I dig french food, but i cannot suppress my utmost love for american diner food.  ...keep in mind, this was not exactly authentic american diney cuisine considering it was in france and all the people who worked there were british.  But they did have hot sauce and a signed poster of the cast of F.R.I.E.N.D.S. on the wall, so that's good enough for me.

after that, the three of us went to see a movie (click to see a tid bit of our day) --weather could not permit anything else.  Maddie and i are cursed when it comes to picking movies.  We decided to see "la vie avec ses yeux" (life through her eyes)...  turns out it was an american movie about a shooting at a highschool--it was really intense and touching in that respect, but as a film it was trying waaaay too hard.  I think it went straight to dvd in the usa, if you know what i mean.  Anyway, both movies maddie and i went to in france have been poorly-executed american films starring uma thurman (who in my opinion should not act unless she has a sword or a body-suit).  we almost had the theatre to ourselves, until four ladies with noisey plastic bags walked in right after the lights turned off.

Tonight was a homework/office and gossip girl catch-up night, but tomorrow i think we'll go to karoke night with avery and fabe.

ps if y'all in america could fix our economy before we return, that'd be great.  yikes.

love and misses and kisses

Social Stars and Supa Stunnas

I love the city, but every once in a while it's nice--if not necessary--to escape.  This past weekend we went to Nancy and Luxembourg, and it's hard to believe that i'm already back on our polka dot sheet-covered couch in Paris.

Last thursday, we went to see the Chateau de Vincennes just outside of paris.  It is a medieval castle, complete with moat (now filled with grass) and dungeons (which, contrary to my previous belief, are not basements.  the king lived in a dungeon, surrounded by a moat, along with his high-status prisoners).  We had to cut our castle visit short to catch a train to Nancy.

As some of you very well know, neither Maddie nor i know how to pack.  We were going out of town for three nights, and maddie and i had our luggage filled to the brim.  We hobbled down our street with our bags practically spilling out our terrible french straightener and passports, trying to swquish (like a bug!) the wild flowers we brought as a housewarming gift.  I'm surprised they made it there.

The train ride was fun, actually.  I am proud to say that Miss Piggy, my five-year-old pink i pod mini, complete with black and white screen, still holds out for long train rides.  I watched quaint french towns and herds of cows (they didn't even need those spots, claire) roll by while listening to haley bonar, wanting to take pictures to share these sights with you, but a camera just couldn't capture it.

Then our train car was empty, and Maddie and I took advantage of it (click to see video of stir-crazy train behavior).

We arrived in Nancy, and were greeted by our three lovely friends, Antoine, Martin, and Alban.  I bove them.  Maddie and I are lucky to have found such fun and inviting people to show us around the Ville de Nancy!  Its a middle-sized city, complete with cobblestone streets and a pretty fountain that we recreated.

Too much happened this weekend to blog about, but i will cover some highlights:

The Pepin Family:
Antoine's mom and dad and sister (and grandparent's cat, and Patton, the dog) were so nice to us.  When we got in to Nancy, they kissed us on the cheeks and we had an amazing home cooked meal of this ham in a sauce with rice.  And bread.  And wine.  And cake, with some other sort of sauce.  And digestif (a tiny amount of liquor in a shot glass, which, madeline and i embarrassingly took like a shot, only to learn 5 min later that you're supposed to sip very slowly to feel the burn... oops...).  Both his parents are super fashionable... just cool.  I want to be them.

Luxemborg:
The second day, Maddie, Alban, Martin, Antoine and myself drove t0 Luxembourg (a small country about an hour from Nancy) to see iamx and crystal castle in concert.  there was no border, hence no reason for my passport.... am i a fugitive?!??!  ahhh.
We drove around looking for Le Rockhal on Rockhal Street (no joke), and had a scary moment where we thought we were in the movie Hostel, because we were surrounded by scary warehouses.  Don't worry, mom, I am alive.

The concert:
We met up with some of the guy's friends from Nancy, and they were also all really cool.  We kind of stood out in a crowd of emo kids and supa stunnas (gothic/emo/basically anything amazing, possibly in costumes).  I had never heard iamx before.  if i had just heard their music on a cd, i probably would have passed it by, but i loved them live.  It was like hard core electronic goodness with lights and awesome stage presence.  sadly the crystal castle show was cut off after like 3 songs, because someone in the audience grabbed the lead singer's mike and she kicked him in the chest, and they stopped the show (that and she was too drunk to continue to perform).

Jumping pictures:
Madeline and I have been really into these in France, trying to capture airborne moments on film.  Luckily our friends in Nancy and Luxembourg were into it too.  We got some cool photos outside the concert in Lux of like 10 people laughing and trying to jump at the same time.

Field Running:
On the way home from Luxembourg, the stars were so amazing, we stopped the car and got out and ran around a field.  Exhilarating.

Animals:
Dandy the kitty was adorable, and tried to sleep on top of maddie (she kicked him out, i cried).  Patton the dog has a beautiful spirit, and i liked walking him.  Maddie and i practiced our french by reading antoine a good morning story about a petit souris (little mouse).  Ratatouille also came in Maddie's suitcase.  He brought his art supplies (he likes collaging), but spent a lot of the time sleeping because he was so tired from travel (he doesn't get out of his pipe much).  here is a video of maddie attempting animal strengths (click).

Belge:
Delish frite sandwich with weird sauce that makes you feel really sick afterward.

Pranks:
Maddie and i are really into pranks.  I discovered that Martin has a hidden talent for pranks when he threw his coins under the table, and while he picked them up, tied Antoine's shoe lace to the chair.  akdfkjadkfjakldjfajhhahahhahahha haha priceless.  sorry, emoseed1.

Cherades:
My favorite was Antoine acting out "Chicken Run" in a park in the middle of the afternoon.  He ran like a chicken, hakdfklajdfklj.  here is a video of the park we went to.  (click!) and another video.... (sorry, i don't know how to embed them in the blog).

Impromptu T&T:
We went out for this guy Mathias' birthday (sorry, krueckeberg, you're next month), and sat around telling hilarious embarrassing stories, of which i have none. :)

So, this post was really long.... to those of you who are actually still reading, i will sum this up by saying that this weekend was super fun.  tomorrow, its back to school..... sigh.  we are getting a new fridge tomorrow, though, so that should be fun, nyuk nyuk nyuk.

i have class in 6 hours, i need to sleep.

a bientot

Oh, Pear!

This past weekend, Sibel's friend Annie and I actually succeeded to meet, at the Arc to Triomphe, no less!  When meeting someone for the first time, especially in a foreign country, there is always a high risk of awkwardness...  but there was none!  She was very cool.  She is living in Saint Germain outside Paris working as an Au Pair (kind of like a live-in nanny) with four kids.  She was born and raised in Portland, her love, collects bird feathers, and shares my deep-felt passion for the book "The Time Traveler's Wife."  We basically crossed the city of paris just wandering, talking, and getting lost.

We also managed to have two picnics.  Annie very wisely brought along some baguette and soy puddings and we had those for lunch on the steps of the opera.  I wanted to show her my love for crepes, so we had some made by this old man at a candy stand who looked like he was about to fall into the crepe stove.  The crepes were pre-made, no fresh batter, but a crepe is a crepe and we even a had a ham and cheese one.  I have decided that i am going to make crepes for all my meals in my apartment, you know, expand my repetoir to something other than just eggs.

We then meandered some more, and found some cool old church.  Don't know which it was, but i am always fascinated by the beauty and amazing detailed handiwork of these old religious buildings.

We walked by the Louvre, and saw the Eiffel tower in the distance.  So made a pilgrimage to the famous tower, stopping to look at the Seine and reminisce about Ratatouille and how  he almost got thrown in.  I am starting to understand why he almost got tossed....  Ratty!  aw.

Having done so much walking, we had a picnic  on the lawn of the Eiffel Tower with baguette, cheese, apples, and wine.  Annie even bought a bottle opener, which could come in quite handy if ever approached by Street Catz.

Annie knew some other Au Pairs in Paris, most of them Swedish Girls.  We met up with them, and eventually met a leprechaun french girl, who turned out to be very nice, and some french dudes who i never learned the names of, and all headed out on the town.  I got to practice my french (who thought i'd actually get an opportunity to speak it here!>!>!>!?!?) and learned some Swedish (none of which i can remember).

Whilst i was in Paris, My little Moogie went to Nancy (Madeline will most likely blog about this soon, so Stay Tuned, Kidz!!).  After annie left i like stared at the door, waiting for Maddie to enter.  I walked around our apartment, reminiscing of the fun times Maddie and I had.  I was scared to sleep alone in our bed(s), and tossed and turned, afraid of who might climb in my window.  Hahahaha well actually i was okay, but i did have a bit of separation anxiety and insomnia.  My little booboo was all grown up and on her own, and i missed her.

4 Cities at Once, Holla!!!!!!!!!@#$%^&*

I just had a lovely time hanging out with my friends.... via video chat.  Kudos to technology, because Minneapolis, Chicago, London and Paris were all connected for a bit tonight.  It's so great when I get to talk to people from home--it makes a foreign country feel a little less foreign.  Love and miss you so much.  Happy Birthday Claire!

Ver*sigh*

Maddie posted some ill pics from Versailles.  I would also like to comment on the place.  It was in Versaille that i realized i was born to live in a castle.  Did you know that during the rein of Louis XIV, there were 10,000 people living in the Versailles castle?  The king wanted to keep his people close, and the citizens wanted to be near the "sun king."  the closer you physically were to the king, the more power you had.  I wish i could house all of my loves back in america in our apartment here.  I dont think we could fit 10,000, but thats okay because i definatly do not have that many friends.  still, if y'all want i can try rent out the castle so we can all hang out in france together, and get lost in the maze and feed swans together.  i think that would be nice.  i'll contact Shane an Jenelle, the real estate agents with cartoon advertisements on bus benches in saint paul.  I hope they can help me out.

we went to Versailles with our Revolution class.  Which was cool, i mean, i'd rather learn in a garden than in a classroom, but i was very distracted during our lectures and discussions.  i spent most of my time twitching (and SHIVERING in the morning--it was soooo cold!!) and trying to stop myself from running off and jumping into a row boat and taking my dear madeline on a romantic ride.

i like modern art, but there is a time and a place for it.  there was a jeff koons exhibition INSIDE the castle.  It was terrible.  when i am looking at a ballroom where royalty had parties before the revolution, i don't want to see a blow-up lobster i would have rode in the Olander's pool when i was 12 years old hanging in the center of the room.  i took some pictures of these things, just so you know what i'm talking about.

Now that i've seen the castle, i really want to see Marie Antoinette's farm, where she pretended to be a peasant.  all peasants have their lambs fur died to match the color of their dresses everyday, right?
